In 1864, Bishop Wilmer, of the
Episcopal Diocese of Alabama, saw the plight of the
orphans of the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemic,
so he planned a children’s home called “Wilmer Hall
Children’s Home”, which was first located in Tuscaloosa,
Alabama.
After the war the home was moved to Mobile in 1867 in
the East Church Street Historical District. The original
home is still standing in British Park downtown Mobile.
In the early 1914 moved to its present location at 3811
Old Shell Road in the Spring Hill area of Mobile. The
home consists of the three original buildings and 4
resident cottages.
The home provides a safe, secure family environment for
children who are unable to stay with their natural
family. Wilmer Hall houses both boys and girls up to the
age of 21.
At Wilmer Hall, the children are given an opportunity to
lead normal healthy lives. The programs offered are Long
term Residential and Transitional Living.
The mission of Wilmer Hall is to provide a safe and
growth-producing environment for children in need. The
mission is accomplished through application of Christian
principles delivered in a home-like atmosphere that
engenders spiritual, physical and educational health for
both residents and staff. |
